NAUVOO FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT
The Nauvoo Fire Protection District was established in June of 1951 to provide fire protection services to approximately 3,500 people living in a district consisting of 66 square miles in Hancock County, IL. The district includes the City of Nauvoo, 5 townships (Nauvoo Township, Sonora Township, Appanoose Township, Rock Creek Township, and Montebello Township), and the unincorporated community of Powellton; the district also includes 147 acres of wildlife refuge which consists of the Nauvoo State Park and the Reed Wildlife Refuge
In 1967 the fire department location was moved from 50 N. Bluff St. in Nauvoo, IL to its current location at 2015 Mulholland St. Nauvoo, IL. In 2000 the current firehouse went through extensive renovations which added a 50ft. x 50ft. meeting space that is now used widely by community members for meetings and events. The renovations also modified the height of the building by adding 3ft. to compensate for the height of a new fire apparatus that was purchased the following year. The current firehouse serves as an emergency shelter during any area disaster or crisis and is a common meeting place for many community meetings. The firehouse includes a small fitness/rehab center designed for the use of firefighters to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The firehouse is also equipped with an emergency generator and essential communication devices for use during times of disaster or emergencies.
In 1991 the Nauvoo Fire District added emergency medical services to the department by becoming a First Responder service. In the years following, the need for emergency medical services grew quickly, leading the fire district to the process of upgrading their medical license. In 1998 the first group of E.M.Ts were certified, and the district began providing B.L.S Non-Transport services. Since this date, the district has averaged approximately 3.2 emergency calls per week with almost 90% of those calls needing medical services. The Nauvoo Fire administrators again determined a growing need for emergency medical services in the district and noted that because their current license didn't allow them to transport patients, precious time was lost; In 2008 the district licensed their first Basic Life Support ambulance service capable of transporting patients. The need for E.M.S in the district continues to go rapidly, currently the Nauvoo Fire District staffs 2 B.L.S ambulances 24/7, and consists of 20 E.M.Ts.
The Nauvoo Fire District strives to be a top tier provider of fire protection and emergency medical services. The Nauvoo Fire Protection District currently operates a fleet of 2 B.L.S ambulances, 1 Ladder Company, 3 Engine Companies, and 1 Rescue Company. Department personel are continuously preparing and training for any emergency that could arise. It is through the dedication of a 28 memeber department that we are able to maintain and provide the best fire protection and emergency medical services to the district.
